About Good Friends

What is Good Friends?

Good Friends is a volunteering project in Darlington with a difference.

The initiative works alongside Darlington’s Neighbourhood Watch to bridge the gap between voluntary social services such as Age UK Darlington’s Befriending and a just ‘Watching’ approach.  A network of Good Friends is being established across Darlington to keep a watchful eye on older, isolated and/or vulnerable neighbours; they will provide support, friendship and assist them with a range of issues which if left unaddressed could compromise their ability to live safely and independently.

People from all walks of life are welcome to get involved, and the focus is on the little ways you can help make life easier for an older or vulnerable person in your area. If you want to volunteer but don’t have a lot of free time, or you want to get involved in another project alongside your usual volunteering, Good Friends is for you.

The project works by partnering you with someone in your area who needs a little extra help once in a while. This could include:

  • Helping with their wheelie bin once a week.
  • Tidying up their garden when needed.
  • Assisting with using their computer to shop online.
  • Even just checking up on them now and then.

As Good Friends is running in partnership with Neighbourhood Watch, you will also be registered as a member and receive updates on what’s going on in your area.

What additional support do we provide?

Good Friends is delivered by Age UK Darlington and supported by Neighbourhood Watch. As such we have a wealth of knowledge and support to provide that will empower Good Friends volunteers and offer additional support to the recipients of the service in a variety of ways.

Through close links with local organisations and support providers, we offer a comprehensive signposting service when a need for specialist support is identified. Good Friends is also an outlet for organisations to signpost their own service users when it’s felt they may benefit from additional support from a Friend.

“A simple gesture once or twice a week can make all the difference to a vulnerable person. If we can set a precedent now by getting neighbours of all ages talking and caring for each other then we will set an example for future generations.” - Age UK
