LGC Awards 2015

The Good Friends Scheme, launched in October 2013, is a Darlington Partnership initiative, operated by Age UK Darlington and funded by several local bodies with the aim of preventing loneliness and isolation among elderly and vulnerable people in Darlington.

The scheme has to date helped 465 people across Darlington through it’s army of over 700 volunteers – 2% of the adult population!

In early 2015, Good Friends was nominated for a prestigious Local Government Chronicle award in the category of Health and Social Care.

Darlington Partnership Director, Seth Pearson, and Age UK Darlington Chief Executive, Gillian Peel attended the Awards ceremony on Wednesday 11th March at the Grosvenor Hotel where Good Friends was revealed as the winner.

In their final comments, the Awards judging panel described the Good Friends scheme as having a measurable impact on the health and wellbeing of those involved.

They added: “It demonstrates brilliant partnership working between the council, two NHS trusts, the CCG, the police, Age UK and Neighbourhood Watch.

"Judges were impressed with the way it develops users into advocates and mobilises the local community."

On winning the award, Gillian Peel said: "It’s been amazing to see how this partnership initiative has grown; this award is very well deserved. I look forward to seeing the scheme continue to grow and improve the lives of the people of Darlington."
