D-day 70th Anniversary Commemorated with Veteran Good Friends

2:07 PM, Jul 03 2014

Many older people, and amongst them a number of local veterans were in attendance to the 70th Anniversary D-day which took place on 24th June 2014 at Bradbury House.  In particular, Good Friend recipient and Royal Navy veteran Roy was in attendance, who at the grand age of 96 recently joined the Darlington Veterans group.

Roy came in to contact with Good Friends following encouragement from Darlington Fire Service, seeking some light assistance around the home and to get more involved with social activities. The difference over the past few months has been phenomenal for Roy, seeing him becoming a well respected member of the Veterans club, regular attendee of Lunch clubs around the town and the support of a Good Friend local to him.

All in attendance to the commemoration event thoroughly enjoyed the entertainment which included 1940's music, games, quizzes, a buffet lunch, ukelele session and a tea dance finale.

Reverend Robert Williamson of St Cuthberts Church led a tribute to those who lost their lives during the D-day landings.

Further, Roy will be celebrating his 97th Birthday next Tuesday 8th July at the new Elm Ridge Lunch Club, held at Elm Ridge Methodist Church from 12PM to 2PM. All are welcome to the club, priced at £3.00 per person including lunch and refreshments. If travel is a concern, we may be able to arrange transportation, so contact us on 01325 362832 today.
